What’s Your ‘Made It’ Moment?

Last week, my editor told me I needed to add more ‘personal colour’ to my book. “Let them know about your successes as a person,” she said. “When was your ‘made it’ moment?”

Those who know me, know I’m no wilting violet – nor am I shy when it comes to claiming my wins. But it was a tricky question to answer.

I ended up writing about (spoiler alert) a summer a few years back when I took two whole weeks out of the gyms to go on holiday with my family.

W10 was thriving: almost at capacity, member attrition sitting steadily at 3%, a healthy bottom line, and the headspace to be considering my next step.

And best of all, I was able to come away from the business for two whole weeks, safe in the knowledge that the people I’d left running the show would handle everything as well as (if not better than) me.

Don’t get me wrong, life wasn’t all sunshine and butterflies. I was exhausted from operating at sprint intensity for marathon duration for too long, and I had no idea of the bumps in the road that were ahead of me. But at that moment, I had everything I’d been working for: a successful business, an amazing team, money in the bank, and enough freedom and time to spend with my nearest and dearest.

We talk a lot about goal setting, but maybe we don’t take enough time to celebrate our wins. Just being operational after the shitshow of the last few years is a massive achievement in itself. And although the road ahead isn’t as plain sailing as we might’ve hoped, it’s still worth giving ourselves a pat on the back for work well done.
